About

Hotel Santa Maria

Hotel Santa Maria occupies a former monastery in Trastevere, one of Rome's most characterful districts. The 3-star property keeps things intimate, with a handful of room types centered around a sunny courtyard filled with citrus trees. Public areas include a bar, a TV lounge, and a terrace — the courtyard itself is the main draw, offering a quiet escape from the busy streets outside. Free Wi-Fi is available in common areas, and the front desk is staffed around the clock.

Guests rate the hotel 9.1 out of 10 (from over 1,000 reviews), with location and service scoring particularly well. Prices start from around £112 per night. The hotel's position off a quiet square puts most of central Rome within walking distance, and the neighborhood is packed with trattorias and wine bars.

In brief

What works, what to weigh

+

Strengths

3 reasons to book
  • Exceptional location in Trastevere — The hotel sits on a quiet square in one of Rome's most atmospheric neighborhoods, within a 10–15 minute walk of Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, and Castel Sant'Angelo. Many guests highlight the convenience for exploring the historic centre on foot.
  • Secluded courtyard garden — The interior courtyard, planted with orange and fruit trees, provides a peaceful retreat from the lively streets. Guests consistently describe it as a 'serene oasis' and a highlight of their stay.
  • Friendly, attentive service — The English-speaking team is frequently praised for being warm, helpful, and eager to please. The atmosphere feels family-run, and extra touches like an evening snack setup and fresh fruit bowl are appreciated.

Worth weighing

2 to weigh
  • Rooms feel dated and could use renovation — Several guests note that the rooms are small, poorly lit, and furnished with tired décor (flowered polycotton fabrics, dim lighting). The bathrooms also show their age, with flapping shower curtains and low light levels. The courtyard's artificial flowers detract from the otherwise charming setting.
  • Breakfast hot selection is limited — The breakfast buffet is generally good, with fresh pastries and good coffee, but the only hot item offered is eggs. In cooler weather, the courtyard is too cold to sit in, reducing the appeal of the breakfast setting.

“A charming hotel with friendly staff. Breakfast features fresh pastries and excellent coffee. The location in a lively neighborhood is ideal for sightseeing, and it's only 3.5 km from the main train station.”

“The location is close to all major sights in Trastevere, within walking distance of main attractions, with amazing restaurants and beautiful scenery. Ombre Rosse nearby is a great spot to relax.”

“The courtyard is charming and filled with orange trees.”

“The triple room with a queen bed has the basic facilities needed. The hotel serves delicious food.”

9.1Verified guest

“The hotel is very sweet and well-located, but it badly needs a complete refurbishment. Our room was small (adequate), very poorly lit, with flowery polycotton curtains and bedcover. The courtyard is delightful with tables under orange trees, but fake flowers and plants, including false marigolds, are intrusive. The bathroom needs attention: a flapping shower curtain around the bath and dim lighting. The shower is very powerful though.”

04 — Location

Getting around Rome

The property sits in Rome.

Trastevere: Trastevere is a historic neighborhood on the west bank of the Tiber, known for its narrow cobbled streets, romantic piazzas, and an abundance of restaurants and bars. Major sights like Piazza Navona and Castel Sant'Angelo are within a 10–20 minute walk across the river. The area is lively in the evenings yet the hotel sits on a quiet lane, offering the best of both worlds.

The bottom line

A solid three-star base in Trastevere that leans heavily on its location and courtyard charm. Service is warm and the price is fair, but rooms are tired and small. If you prioritise neighbourhood atmosphere and a quiet place to rest over modern interiors, this is a fine choice.

9.1Charming base in Trastevere with a courtyard, but rooms show their age.
